We have evolved our membership program and have recently ended our solicitation of annual and life memberships. Today, we encourage you to use your membership dollars to support the
Gaucho for Life Fund for UCSB Alumni.

Membership Transition FAQs

We are expanding UC Santa Barbara Alumni to include all alumni and discontinuing our dues-based model. This means that 2017 will be our last year of offering memberships. With more than 210,000 alumni but fewer than 23,000 members, it has become obvious that we need a more inclusive organization to better engage and support the entire UC Santa Barbara alumni community. A more inclusive structure opens doors of opportunity and better meets the needs of UC Santa Barbara alumni, both socially and professionally.

Absolutely not! UCSB Alumni is now focused on building mutually beneficial lifelong relationships with all alumni, not just our members. Our Board and staff will continue to engage all of our alumni in order to sustain a powerful network of Gauchos for life.

The Alumni Board of Directors spent much time and consideration before making this change, and believe it will enable us to better serve our entire alumni population. In fact, the Board of Directors has been reviewing this transition since 2008.

You will gain a broader network of people for new connections and opportunities. Life Members will not lose any of their premium benefits. The first step to being more involved is making sure we have your correct contact information so we can invite you to upcoming events. Yes! Life Members will continue to receive premium benefits, including discounts to Arts & Lectures, access to the UCSB Library, subscription to Coastlines magazine, and much more. As we roll out new programming, we hope that you will take advantage of those opportunities as well.

Get Involved. Attend events. Volunteer your time. Become a mentor for a student or recent graduate.  Give to the Gaucho for Life Fund or any other fund that is near and dear to your heart. Tell us what we are doing right and what we can do better. Be an ambassador. Keep us posted on you and your successes. Stay up to date on what's happening on campus by visiting alumni.ucsb.edu.

Funding will be provided from several sources: fundraising, UC Santa Barbara Alumni reserves, and sponsorships/affinity programs. In addition, we hope that alumni will continue to support UCSB Alumni through donations.

UCLA, UC Santa Cruz, UC San Diego, among many other universities across the country have all switched from member-based organizations to all-inclusive organizations.

No. Your contributions or donations to UCSB through the Annual Fund provide unrestricted support to UC Santa Barbara. Contributions and donations to UCSB Alumni (through the Gaucho for Life Fund) support essential programming for Alumni Affairs, student scholarships, networking events, and much more.

Yes, we will continue to refer to all of our Life Members as “Life Members.” Life Members will retain their distinction as an exclusive group within UCSB Alumni.
